BAT – Best Available Technology

Technical processes that are particularly environmentally friendly and resource-efficient according to the current state of the art. Serves as a basis for recommendations in industrial wastewater treatment. BAT (Best Available Techniques) describes the state of the art for environmentally friendly production and treatment processes as defined by the EU. In the field of BAT wastewater, this includes all processes that enable particularly efficient, resource-saving, and environmentally friendly wastewater treatment for industry. The BREF documents serve as a reference for determining BAT, specifying which processes are considered particularly effective and economical for specific industries.
In the wastewater sector, these include, for example, evaporators, ultrafiltration plants, and coalescence separators, which can help to implement the recommendations of the BAT Wastewater Directive for Industry.

Bed rail oils

Bedway oils support the formation of a lubricating film on the machine surface. Bedway oils must have high adhesive properties both under the influence of cooling lubricants and during machine downtimes, as otherwise the bedway oil would be squeezed out of the lubrication gap under high loads from the workpiece being machined.

BREF – Best Available Techniques Reference Documents

The BREF documents (Best Available Techniques Reference Documents) are European reference documents that describe in detail which techniques are considered “best available” for individual industries. They are published by the European Commission and serve as the basis for the BAT Wastewater Directive. For the area of BAT wastewater, BREF documents contain specific information on: Technologies that are recognized as state of the art Typical emission and discharge values that can be achieved with these processes Energy efficiency and resource conservation measures Companies can use this information to review their facilities and, if necessary, switch to processes such as evaporators, ultrafiltration, or coalescence separators that comply with the recommendations. The BREF recommendations are implemented within the legal framework of the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED).

Bypass operation

Bypass operation refers to a process that takes place during ongoing production. For example, our foreign oil separators operate in bypass mode, which means that the machines have no downtime.

Centrifugal force

Centrifugal force is also known as centrifugal force. It is an inertial force that is directed outward from the axis of rotation and occurs during rotational and circular movements. Centrifugal force is caused by the inertia of the body. In everyday life, it can be observed, for example, on a chain carousel or in a salad spinner.

Coalescence principle

The principle of coalescence refers, for example, to the process whereby tiny oil droplets attach themselves to lamellae and then “coalesce” to form larger droplets. This is a physical principle whereby droplets contained in a liquid or in the air combine to form a larger droplet. 

Coalescence separator

Coalescence separators are separation systems that bring together (“coalesce”) fine oil droplets in water or aqueous media so that they form larger droplets and can be more easily separated from the water phase due to differences in density. This principle is often used in industrial wastewater treatment and cooling lubricant maintenance to efficiently remove foreign oils. A typical example of such systems are the foreign oil separators from MKR Metzger. They operate according to the coalescence principle, are available in mobile or stationary versions, and enable continuous oil separation without machine downtime. As a result, they contribute to longer service life of washing or cooling lubricant media, lower disposal costs, and more stable process quality.

Coalescer

A coalescer can be used to remove unemulsified foreign oil droplets that float on the surface. Coalescers are available in various designs as fixed installations and mobile devices.

Cooling lubricant

Cooling lubricant is used in production and metalworking to reduce friction, to clean the working environment and also provides corrosion protection for the workpiece. Cooling lubricant is synonymous with the term cooling lubricant.

Deburring chamber

Thermal deburring, the thermal deburring method, or so-called explosion deburring is carried out in a deburring chamber. This is a manufacturing process in which thin protruding burrs (edges, fraying, or splinters created during machining or manufacturing processes) are removed from metallic or non-metallic workpieces. To do this, a mixture of oxygen and hydrogen, natural gas, or methane is fed into the deburring chamber and then ignited electrically.

Defoamer

Defoamers are substances that prevent foam formation. They are also known as foam breakers, foam inhibitors, foam preventatives, and anti-foaming agents.

Diaphragm

A membrane is a thin layer of material or fabric that can have different properties. It can be either impermeable, partially permeable (semipermeable), or completely permeable. Membranes have a large surface area in relation to their thickness. Under load, they can only absorb tensile forces and transfer them to their edges, which is also referred to as membrane tension. An example of this would be a soap bubble.

Digestates

Digestates from a biogas plant are thickened by our evaporator process and can then be spread on fields as concentrated fertiliser. This means: 70% fewer trips due to digestate treatment!

Distillate

A distillate is a product produced during distillation. Distillation is a thermal separation process in which liquid substances are purified and separated from other substances through evaporation and reconversion, resulting in a distillate as the end product. 

Electroplating

Electroplating, also known as galvanic technology, is a surface and coating technique. Electroplating involves the electrochemical deposition of metals on metallic or metallized surfaces. This is done using an electrolyte and direct current. Electroplating wastewater treatment uses atmospheric evaporation technology, which ensures that the rinse water quality remains consistently high. Electroplating systems are used, among other things, for the surface treatment of metals (steel, aluminum, magnesium, etc.) and plastics. Electroplating is mainly used for cleaning (e.g., degreasing), pickling, and stripping (creating surface roughness, e.g., aluminum).

Emulsion

An emulsion is a mixture of two or more, normally immiscible liquids such as oil and water. Emulsions are indispensable in metalworking. Their effect is, however, reduced successively by bacteria and tramp oils. MKR offers you filtering and cleaning systems that can be integrated into your production. This extends significantly the service lives of emulsions and other process media as well as tools.

Emulsion care

Emulsion maintenance is necessary to extend the service life of the emulsion and reduce odor and costs. Emulsion maintenance removes foreign oil from the emulsion. An emulsion is generally a mixture of two immiscible liquids that cannot be mixed together. One liquid is distributed in the form of small droplets in the other liquid. Emulsion maintenance also has a protective effect on machines and tools by continuously cleaning the emulsion.
