IED – Industrial Emissions Directive
The Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) is an EU directive that regulates the authorization and monitoring of industrial facilities. Its aim is to reduce environmental pollution. It provides the legal framework within which the BAT Wastewater Directive and the associated BREF documents are implemented.
In the area of BAT wastewater, the IED stipulates, among other things:
- that industrial installations subject to authorization must align their processes with the state of the art
- that limit values and target values for emissions must be complied with
- that operators must regularly check whether their installations are operating in accordance with BAT
For wastewater treatment, this often means using modern technology such as evaporators, ultrafiltration, or coalescence separators to achieve the standards described in the BREF documents.
