Case Study: Modern Evaporation Technology for Industrial Wastewater Treatment

Efficient Treatment of Industrial Wastewater in the Waste Disposal & Recycling Industry

May 27, 2026

An established waste disposal company based in Austria decided to modernize its existing physico-chemical wastewater treatment process and invested in a new, future-proof evaporation line for the treatment of industrial wastewater. The objective of the project was to increase process reliability, ensure long-term compliance with environmental regulations, and improve the overall efficiency and flexibility of the wastewater treatment operation.

As no suitable infrastructure for evaporation technology was previously available on site, the complete system had to be designed, engineered, and installed from scratch — from media handling and collection to the compliant discharge of the treated distillate.

The Challenge

The existing wastewater treatment system was based on conventional physico-chemical treatment methods. Due to increasingly strict discharge requirements and growing demands for process reliability, the existing technology was reaching its operational limits.

One of the main challenges was the treatment of various industrial wastewaters and spent emulsions originating from metalworking operations. The composition of the wastewater streams changed frequently, requiring a highly flexible yet stable treatment process. In addition, the treated distillate had to meet all regulatory discharge requirements at all times.

The new system also needed to:

  • handle varying wastewater streams flexibly
  • integrate IBC containers and vacuum truck unloading
  • provide automated pH monitoring and control
  • ensure stable and reliable operation
  • replace the existing treatment concept long-term

The Solution

Following detailed consultations and laboratory analysis, MKR Metzger developed a fully customized wastewater treatment concept tailored to the customer’s requirements.

The installed system includes:

  • IBC filling station for flexible media handling
  • pH adjustment tank for acidic and alkaline wastewater streams
  • pump station for process transfer
  • belt filter with integrated tramp oil separator
  • bag filter for fine filtration
  • ET 250 evaporator for separation of water and concentrate
  • light phase separator for reliable oil removal
  • monitoring and control technology for continuous pH and temperature supervision

The entire process solution was delivered by MKR as a complete turnkey system — from engineering to commissioning.

Efficient Evaporation Technology

The core component of the installation is an atmospheric evaporator of the ET 250 series. The evaporation technology enables safe and efficient separation of water and contaminants, even when treating highly contaminated industrial wastewater streams.

The upstream filtration and oil separation stages reduce the load on the evaporator and significantly improve operational reliability. Once all discharge parameters are met, the treated distillate can be discharged directly into the sewage system. If required, an automatic pH adjustment system ensures additional compliance security.

The system was specifically designed for flexible operation with varying wastewater streams and therefore offers high process stability with minimal operator intervention.

The Results

With the new evaporation line, the waste disposal company successfully modernized and future-proofed its industrial wastewater treatment process.

Key project results include:

  • complete turnkey system from a single supplier
  • efficient treatment of industrial wastewater
  • reliable and compliant wastewater discharge
  • high flexibility through variable intake systems
  • automated process control
  • stable discharge quality
  • future-proof alternative to conventional physico-chemical treatment

By combining filtration, oil separation, evaporation technology, and automated process monitoring, MKR delivered a powerful and sustainable solution for industrial wastewater treatment in the waste disposal and recycling industry.
